Guadagno’s TV Political Ad Parrots Trump’s False Generalizations About Immigrants And Shows Lack of Judgement
The Overwhelming Majority of Immigrants Are not Criminal
Statement by Dr. Maria Teresa Montilla,
President of The Latino Leadership Alliance of New Jersey (LLANJ)
“Republican candidate for governor Kim Guadagno should immediately withdraw her political ad that parrots Trump’s false generalizations and insults about undocumented immigrants, who are primarily Latino, as ‘criminals, rapists and murderers’,” said Dr. Maria Teresa Montilla, President of the Latino Leadership Alliance of New Jersey (LLANJ).
“Anyone who commits a crime should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, regardless of his or her immigration status, race, nationality, religious beliefs, gender or political affiliation.
However, generalizing that a particular group is deviant because one of its members committed a crime betrays our American values and has caused us pain. These blatant lies have been repudiated by the American Immigration Council, which has found that ‘the overwhelming majority of immigrants are not criminal by any commonly accepted definition of the term and that far too many immigration policies are drafted on the basis of stereotypes.’ We must stand together against the use of such stereotypes no matter who invokes them.
This hurtful and insulting political campaign ad demonstrates lack of judgement, at best, and a racist, anti-immigrant bias, at worst, that doesn’t belong in public office. It does not represent the best interests of the diverse people of the great state of New Jersey; particularly immigrants who contribute greatly to the U.S. economy and society.”
